Minnesota bill to limit plastic packaging for food due to harmful chemicals

A new bill at the Minnesota Capitol is igniting discussions about the plastic used by food manufacturers for packaging. Lawmakers are raising concerns about a chemical added to the plastic to enhance its flexibility and durability: phthalates. While phthalates improve the plastic's performance, they don't remain in the material; instead, they leach into the food we consume and can lead to various health problems.

Senator Heather Gustafson (DFL-Vadnais Heights), the sponsor of the bill, compares this issue to the dangers posed by "forever chemicals" that have been harming people.

Coalition for Plastic Reduction MN is one of several groups working hard to pass this bill to protect Minnesotan’s health and especially the most vulnerable, our children.
