Can microplastics harm us?
Plastic is everywhere, from synthetic clothes to food containers, car tires, and hospital supplies. But now, it's also found inside our bodies. As plastic is produced, used, and discarded, it releases tiny particles and fibers that enter the air, water, and food we consume. Microplastics have even been discovered in human breast milk, placenta, testicles, and hearts. MPR News guest host Euan Kerr speaks with Dr. Zeke McKinney, an occupational and environmental physician and researcher with HealthPartners, and Mary Kosuth, an assistant researcher and PhD candidate in Environmental Health Sciences at the University of Minnesota, about where plastic is showing up in our bodies, how it gets there, and the ongoing research into its potential links to human health.
